This is a living commitment, not a statement. It shapes how we commission stories, how we credit contributors, and what we choose not to publish.
Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia and honour their continuing connection to Country, waters, culture and community. We pay respect to Elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the custodians of the world's oldest continuous living cultures. That is not a symbolic claim — it is a fact of tens of thousands of years of knowledge, science, art, law and language.
Everything we publish about First Nations peoples starts from that recognition.
We use accurate language. We name specific nations, clans and language groups wherever we can, rather than lumping distinct peoples into a single label. We check names, spellings and country boundaries with community sources before publication.
First Nations stories are reviewed, contributed to, or led by First Nations voices wherever possible. We seek consultation early — at commissioning, not after publication — and we compensate cultural expertise as expertise.
We do not reproduce restricted knowledge, sacred imagery, ceremonial material or images and names of people who have passed without explicit community authority. Where a story includes references to people who have passed, we may include a warning at the top of the piece.
Any Indigenous artwork used on the platform — commissioned or licensed — is credited to the artist and their community, with permission recorded and cultural protocols respected. We do not use generative AI to imitate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander art styles.
